Audi Q5 driving off-road demonstating the quatto® all-wheel drive system

Audi quattro® Explained

Audi quattro® is the advanced all-wheel drive system that helps create a safe and trouble-free driving experience where two-wheel drive vehicles no longer have traction, like on wet, slippery, loose, and unpaved road surfaces.

Originally introduced over 35 years ago, quattro® was the first permanent all-wheel drive system ever put into passenger cars and has helped turn Audi into the global brand that it is today. Thanks to its legendary capability, quattro® is available on every new Audi model.

What Makes quattro® So Good?

The Audi quattro® all-wheel drive system intuitively delivers power to the wheels with the most grip, maximizing traction in adverse driving conditions. When driving in treacherous conditions without quattro®, your vehicle's engine may sending unneccessary power to wheels that don't have complete traction, resulting in you spinning your tires and potentially loosing control.

Audi quattro® Systems

Unlike some other all-wheel drive systems, Audi tailors each quattro® system to the specific vehicle it's found on. For example, high-performance Audi models are available with a unique version of quattro® that differs from the Audi SUVs. By tailoring the system to each vehicle's intended purpose, quattro® can provide enhanced performance and traction benefits.

Audi quattro® Variable Torque Split

Variable Torque Split

A variable torque split between the front and rear wheels can deliver power where and when it's needed most, granting more traction to the wheels with the most grip. It helps give you surer footing on ever-shifting road conditions.

Audi quattro® Torque Vectoring

Torque Vectoring

It's all about physics. Available torque vectoring works by braking the inside wheel(s) in corners, proactively transferring torque to the outside wheels — which helps turn the car and improve handling performance.

Audi quattro® Sport Differential

Sport Differential

Available on select vehicles, including S and RS models, the sport differential uses an active rear differential to not only send power to the outside rear wheel in corners, but to also accelerate that wheel up to 10 percent faster. Simply put, the sport differential uses the rear wheels to help turn the vehicle for maximum cornering performance.

Audi quattro® Performance

quattro® all-wheel drive isn't just designed for wet weather. With its legendary grip and available torque vectoring technology, quattro® significantly enhances handling and cornering performance in dry-weather conditions as well.
